The Portland Timberfish is a US Masters Swim Team dedicated to creating a safe and playful space for the local LGBTQ+ swimmers. Our mission is to promote fitness and community. Begun in 2014 as a disorganized group of about eight swimmers at the local community pool, we’ve grown and are now a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) and have weekly coached swims at a local Portland pool. In addition, we compete, race triathlon and open water swimming and have an active social schedule. We’re a fun group!

Working out with the Timberfish

We are open to swimmers of all levels. We find a basic knowledge of swim etiquette, an eagerness to learn all four strokes/flipturns and the ability to swim about 200 yards uninterrupted are good guidelines to determine if you’ll enjoy the workout. You do not need to be fast or expert.

If you decide to join our team, we require that you join our U.S. Masters Swimming group which allows us to rent pool time. Your first workout is free; subsequent swims are $7. After three swims you’ll be expected to join the team. Dues are nominal and vary. Contact us for details, contactnull@portlandtimberfish.org.

We currently (last updated: June 2017) swim 60 minutes once a week on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at a local Portland pool. If you’d like to join us, please reach out at contactnull@portlandtimberfish.org. You’ll need to be on the roster to get into the facility. We will be having informal outdoor swims this summer at community pools and lakes/rivers. For real time updates, check out our Facebook page.
